Life's Driving Strength

by Mary, written for Lydia

"To watch us dance is to hear our hearts speak."

Hopi Indian Saying

JC stayed in the rehearsal room long after his rehearsal had ended. There were few people left in the building; most left by 10 and it was already nearing midnight. He couldn't leave though. Justin's words kept running through his head and they were starting to mix in with Lance's offers, Kelliana's predictions, and his own thoughts. He closed his eyes and let his body carry him into a story, the only music playing in his mind.

He leaped into a memory of the first time he saw and met Justin on his audition date.
He did a series of pirouettes when he remembered the way the two of them spun out of control late at night when their passion for dance was turned off and their love for each other was turned on full-force.
He stretched out his body as much as he could when visions of the first time Justin claimed his body filtered in.
He curled in on himself before spreading into an arabesque when he thought of the freedom Lance was offering him and the safety the company was already giving him.
His body twisted before jumping into the air in a series of kicks when he thought of all the performances he had done.
His hand lifted the air above him as he thought of Kelliana and the work they had done.
JC fell to his knees when he couldn't take it anymore. He wasn't sure where to go or what to do and he didn't know the ending of the story, the ending of his ballet. For the first time, JC wondered if life would have been easier if he didn't always find a way to dance out the story.
